So you’ve decided to do the IB Diploma Programme. Great choice. Now comes the part that trips up nearly every student — picking your HL and SL subjects.
Most students approach this the wrong way. They go with what their friends are taking, or they pick HL subjects they vaguely like, without thinking about what they’re actually signing up for. Two years later, they’re drowning in a 240-hour HL Chemistry syllabus, wondering where things went wrong.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know — the real difference between HL and SL, how to choose strategically, and the most common mistakes students make. If you’re about to finalise your subject choices, read this carefully.
What’s the Actual Difference Between HL and SL?
Let’s start with the basics — because there’s more to this than just “HL is harder.”
In the IBDP, you study six subjects in total. Three must be at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL) — though some schools allow two HL and four SL with special permission.
| Factor | Higher Level (HL) | Standard Level (SL) |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching hours | ~240 hours over 2 years | ~150 hours over 2 years |
| Depth of content | Additional topics, deeper analysis, more complex assessments | Core syllabus, strong conceptual foundation |
| Grading scale | 1–7 (same scale) | 1–7 (same scale) |
| University weight | Minimum HL scores often required for entry | Contributes to total diploma score |
| Workload | Significantly heavier — plan accordingly | Manageable alongside other HLs |
Both HL and SL subjects are scored on the same 1–7 scale — but universities often specify minimum HL scores for admission and scholarship decisions. A 7 in Chemistry SL does not substitute a Chemistry HL requirement.
Why This Decision Matters More Than You Think
Here’s something schools don’t always tell you clearly: your HL subject choices effectively determine what degree programmes you can apply to.
If you take Economics SL and decide in Year 2 that you want to study Economics at LSE or NUS — you may find yourself ineligible, or significantly less competitive. Switching subjects mid-programme is rarely an option.
On the flip side, overloading yourself with three intensely demanding HLs — say, Physics HL, Chemistry HL, and Maths AA HL — is a recipe for exhaustion and mediocre scores across the board. A 5 in Physics HL and a 7 in Physics SL are very different results from a university perspective. If you’re genuinely not strong in Physics, the SL 7 may serve you far better.
The goal is to choose subjects that align with your genuine strengths and future direction — not to impress anyone or follow the herd.
The Six Subject Groups — Quick Refresher
You must choose one subject from each of the six IB groups, and at least three of your choices must be at HL:
| Group | Subject Examples |
|---|---|
| 1 — Studies in Language & Literature | English A Literature, Hindi A, Language A: Language & Literature |
| 2 — Language Acquisition | French B, Spanish B, Hindi B, Spanish Ab Initio |
| 3 — Individuals & Societies | Economics, Business Management, History, Psychology, Geography |
| 4 — Sciences | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems (ESS), Computer Science |
| 5 — Mathematics | Maths AA (HL or SL), Maths AI (HL or SL) |
| 6 — The Arts | Visual Arts, Music, Theatre — or a second subject from Groups 1–5 |
How to Actually Choose Your HL Subjects
Here’s the framework we use with students at Wisdom Academy when they come to us for guidance before finalising their choices.
Start with your target universities and intended course
Before anything else, research the entry requirements of the courses you’re targeting. This step is non-negotiable. Medicine, Engineering, Economics, and Law all have distinct HL preferences — and ignoring them early means discovering the problem too late to fix it.
Be brutally honest about your strengths
Not what you enjoyed in IGCSE or MYP. Not what your parents want. What you are genuinely good at and can sustain interest in through two demanding years. Honest self-assessment here is the single most important factor in a good HL combination.
Think about your full workload — not just each subject in isolation
Physics HL + Chemistry HL + Maths AA HL is doable for the right student. But add a science Extended Essay and heavy CAS commitments and even a strong student can hit a wall. Consider the whole picture, not just individual subject difficulty.
Talk to students who have been through it
IB students two or three years ahead of you will tell you things no teacher or parent will — which exams were brutal, which topics tripped everyone up, and what they’d change. Seek that conversation out before you finalise.
Medicine / Dentistry: Chemistry HL + Biology HL (or Physics HL)
Engineering / CS: Physics HL + Maths AA HL
Economics / Finance: Economics HL preferred; Maths HL strongly valued
Law: English A Literature HL + History HL often preferred
Always verify with the specific university and programme — requirements vary.

Common HL vs SL Myths — Busted
“HL always looks better on a university application.”
A 6 in SL can look considerably better than a 4 in HL. Universities want evidence of genuine capability, not overreach.
“You should always take your favourite subject at HL.”
Liking a subject and performing well in its HL exam are very different things. Make the distinction clearly before choosing.
“SL subjects are just filler — they barely count.”
Your total IBDP score is out of 45. All six subjects contribute directly. Strong SL scores meaningfully improve your final diploma score.
“You can always change your subjects later if needed.”
Technically possible in the early weeks, but schools lock in subject choices quickly. In practice, switching is rarely available. Decide carefully from the start.
HL vs SL in the Most Popular IB Subjects
Mathematics: AA vs AI, HL vs SL
This is the single most consequential subject choice in the IB — and the one students get wrong most often.
Maths AA HL
Abstract, proof-based, and deeply rigorous. One of the most demanding subjects in the entire IBDP — and one of the most respected. Essential for Engineering, Physics, and Computer Science pathways.
Maths AA SL
Manageable for students with solid IGCSE Additional Maths performance. Good for Economics, Psychology, or any course where maths is required but not the core.
Maths AI HL
Applied and data-focused. Increasingly accepted for Economics and Business management degrees, but less recognised for traditional engineering or pure science pathways.
Maths AI SL
Appropriate for students heading into Arts, Humanities, or Business who need a mathematical foundation but maths is not central to their chosen course.
Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Physics HL is widely considered the most conceptually demanding science option. Chemistry HL involves substantial memorisation alongside complex problem-solving. Biology HL is content-heavy with a vast syllabus but generally more accessible for students who prefer understanding over calculation.
For students targeting Medicine — whether in India alongside NEET preparation, or internationally — Chemistry HL and Biology HL are typically the baseline combination. Most UK, Indian, and Singapore medical schools require both.
Economics and Business Management
Economics HL involves quantitative analysis, policy evaluation, and extended essay-style responses — it’s rigorous and widely respected. Business Management HL is a viable path for students heading into commerce or entrepreneurship. If you’re targeting top universities in the UK, US, or Singapore for Economics, Economics HL is strongly preferred — often listed as a recommended or required subject rather than an optional one.
Final Checklist Before You Finalise Your HL Choices
Before you lock in your subject selection, run through each of these:
- I have checked the specific HL requirements of the courses and universities I’m targeting
- I am choosing HL subjects where I can realistically score 5–7, not just subjects I enjoy
- My combination is manageable alongside TOK, Extended Essay, and CAS commitments
- I have spoken to a teacher or an IB-experienced tutor about my specific combination
- I have confirmed whether my school allows two or three HLs
- I have considered what happens if my first-choice university pathway changes
