IB Maths AA vs AI: Which Pathway Should Your Child Choose?

Every IB Diploma student has to pick one Mathematics route before the Diploma Programme even properly begins — and unlike some subject choices, switching later is difficult once teaching has started. Yet most students choose Maths AA or AI based on a five-minute conversation with a school counsellor, or worse, on which one "sounds easier." This guide breaks down what actually separates the two courses, so the decision is based on how your child thinks and where they're headed — not a guess.

Don't Forget: SL vs HL Is a Separate Decision

AA-vs-AI and SL-vs-HL are two independent choices, and families sometimes conflate them. Whichever route you pick, Standard Level and Higher Level differ substantially — HL is not simply "the same course with harder questions."

Standard Level (SL)

Roughly 150 teaching hours covering the core syllabus. Provides a solid, university-ready foundation and is sufficient for the large majority of non-maths-intensive degree courses.

Higher Level (HL)

Adds roughly 90 further hours and a third exam paper, with genuinely new content — not just harder versions of SL topics. Many competitive engineering, economics, and medicine programmes specifically require or strongly prefer HL.

A common mistake: choosing AI SL specifically to "play it safe," without checking whether the target university course actually requires Maths HL — regardless of route. If a competitive programme is the goal, the level often matters as much as, or more than, which route is chosen.

What About University Requirements?

This is where families go wrong most often, so it's worth being precise: requirements vary significantly by country and by university, and they change from year to year. As a general pattern — not a rule — UK universities differentiate between AA and AI more explicitly, with AA HL often required or strongly preferred for engineering and mathematics-heavy degrees. In the US and Canada, differentiation between AA and AI is less common; universities there tend to care more about SL vs HL than the specific route.

None of this should be treated as fixed. Always verify directly against the specific university's published entry requirements for the specific course before finalising a subject choice — a general trend for "engineering degrees" is not the same as a guarantee for one particular university's admissions matrix.

Look at recent performance patterns, not just grades. Has your child consistently done better on algebra/proof-style questions, or on statistics/data-interpretation questions in past assessments?

Check the target degree's typical requirement — search "[university name] + [course name] + IB requirements" directly on the university's own admissions page, not a forum or aggregator site.

Be honest about calculator dependency. If your child struggles without a calculator for algebraic manipulation, AA's non-calculator Paper 1 will be a real obstacle, regardless of overall ability.
